sieze the day, and the future's ours. That Elisa/Western blot idea is really good, and could be expanded to cover many diseases. I'll keep it in mind. You've struck a molecular chord in me... there's a lot to list down. And at the top of my head, here goes:
For Elisa
1. plate reader
2. microtiter dishes
3. antibodies conjugated with horse-radish peroxidase
4. peroxidase substrate (usually a chromogenic substance from HOECHST)
5. phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS) +/- tris
For the Western, the list includes
1. gel box (Bio Rad is the best)
2. polyacrylamide gels (Bio Rad precast is the best)
3. molecular weight markers (stratagene or new england biolabs)
4. nitrocellulose or nitro/nylon paper
5. antibodies conjugated with horse-radish peroxidase or alkaline phosphatase
6. peroxiadase or phosphatase substrate (either chromogenic or fluorogenic)
7. x-ray film and developer

....
and we have not even touched the "utencils" to get a lab up and running especially the pipette sets and the eppendorf centrifuge.

....
In HK, a typical run from sample preparation to X-ray read out of a Western cost around HK$200, roughly P1400. If 10 samples can be loaded in one run, the base cost for each patient is merely P140. Of course, considering overhead for running a fully stocked lab, you would need to increase this.
.....

The cost of putting up a lab can be staggering. The cost of an ultra-low freezer alone can reach a million P. The gel rigs, the wet lab supplies, the utencils, would easily be another million. And the physical lab infrastructure is another story.
......

With willing partners who know what they're going into, this is doable.

I think I may have to rethink The Purple Room given the, uh, overwhelming requirements but really, I can sense that it will take off. AIDS in the Philippines is a time-bomb waiting to blow itself on our faces. WHO will be so surprised that despite its observation of the RP situationer - low condom utilization YET low AIDS/HIV incidence - could actually be one of the worse medical cases it'd ever handle in this part of the world. Indeed, seize the day!

GENIUS IS JUST ANOTHER MOUSE! said...

WHAAAT?! That cat, unlike a meek rabbit, is likely to cause a ruckus inside a cabinet, he he he!

Redjeulle said...

who said rabbits are meek? oh god, and they poop a lot. i was almost evicted by my own mother, but i beat her to it by moving out. try it, it can be fun. :-)

hmmm... i am bloghopping and i have lost count at what level i've reached when i saw this blog of yours.

comment 1. EEEKGAD!! it's 2008 na pala!

comment 2. i really, really really hate those Simpson's resin statues i saw at the moviehouses that i would either cringe at seeing them, or i'd simply turn away for fear i might grab a table from the snack stand and bang the statues. something in me gets the heebie-jeebies when i see those awful sitting blimps.

nice blog. cheers... :-)
